No drama.

No last-minute dash.

Backpack ready.

First, the bit no one explains well.

You do not need a biology lesson. You need the few facts that actually help you talk to her without either of you cringing. Here they are.

Usually 9 to 14

Most girls start somewhere between 9 and 14, often around years 5 to 8. Earlier or later is still normal.

Light and irregular

First periods are often light, brownish and unpredictable for a year or two. That is completely normal.

About 4 to 7 days

A period usually lasts four to seven days, with the heaviest part in the first couple of days.

Signs it is close

White discharge in her undies, a growth spurt, sore tummy and mood shifts often turn up in the months before.

What actually goes in one

What goes in a first period kit.

A first period kit is not complicated. It is the handful of things that mean she can handle it herself, at school or a friend's place, without calling you in a flap. This is the short list.

Get the printable checklist
  • Leakproof period undies. The main event. Soft, tag-light and no pad to fumble with in a school toilet.
  • A spare pair. So a surprise day at school is a non-event, not a crisis.
  • Intimate wipes. For feeling fresh when there is no shower in sight.
  • A discreet pouch. Lives in her backpack so the whole kit travels with her.
  • A heat patch for cramps. Quiet, stick-on warmth that gets her through a class without a fuss.

Pick the kit that fits where she's at.

Whether she has not started yet or you just want her bag sorted, there is a tween-sized kit for it. All built and packed here, ready to go.

Common questions.

The ones mums ask us most. If yours is not here, send us a message.

What age do most girls get their first period?
Most start between 9 and 14, often around years 5 to 8 at school. Some start at 9, others closer to 16. If she is a bit earlier or later than her friends, that is still within the normal range. If she has not started by about 15, it is worth a chat with your GP.
How will I know it is coming?
The clearest early sign is white or clear discharge in her undies, which often shows up several months to a year before. You might also notice a growth spurt, breast development, mood shifts and the odd sore tummy. Our signs guide walks through the lot.
What is the best first period product for a tween?
For most tweens, leakproof period undies are the easiest place to start. There is nothing to insert and nothing to fiddle with in a school toilet. She just wears them like normal undies. Pads can work too, but undies are far less fuss for a first period, especially at school.
Should she use pads, tampons or period undies first?
Period undies are the gentlest first step. Tampons are not necessary for a first period and many tweens are not ready for them, which is completely fine. She can always add other products later once she knows what her body does.
What should she keep in her school bag?
A small pouch with a spare pair of leakproof undies, a few intimate wipes and a heat patch covers almost every school-day surprise. Our Period Emergency Kit is built exactly for this, or grab the printable checklist and pack your own.
How many pairs of period undies does she need?
Most families find three to five pairs covers a cycle comfortably. She wears a pair by day, washes overnight and rotates through the week. That way there is always a clean pair ready and a spare in her bag.
Can I use NDIS funding for a first period kit?
Often, yes. When period products are part of your daughter's continence or personal-care needs, they can be funded through her NDIS plan. We have set out how ordering works for plan-managed and self-managed families on our NDIS period kits page.
Are period undies safe for a 10-year-old?
Yes. They are just undies with a built-in leakproof lining, so there is nothing going inside her body. They are soft, seamless on the inside and sized for tweens, which is why a lot of mums choose them as the very first thing.
